Mother Nature does what Occupy Wall Street couldn’t

Mother Nature does what Occupy Wall Street couldn’t

OWS demonstrators merely got themselves arrested.   #Sandy  just shut down NYSE by flooding the market, literally.  3′ of water reported on the floor of the Stock Exchange.

The headlines will sound somewhat contradictory…
“Trading down while volume is up on NYSE”

Edit
Now they say the earlier reports were wrong, it’s now sunny and 70… Or maybe the water is still rising,.. Come on people get it right.

Presidential Debate Round Prediction

Presidential Debate Round Prediction

Tonight I predict Obama will have studied up a bit more for tonight’s debate.

I hope Romney takes him to school again, but I expect Obama to hit pretty hard early on.  Romney will not be able to nail him down on anything specific because Obama will sidestep the issues.  I hope Romney hits on the record Obama now has to run on, but I don’t think he will.

Vice Presidential Debate Prediction

Vice Presidential Debate Prediction

I think this will be the best debate this election cycle. I think both will hit each other pretty hard.

If Biden doesn’t get foot in mouth disease, I think he will most likely pull out a win, he usually does pretty well in debates.

Not hoping for it, just being honest.

If he has a major mis-speak (as he frequently does) it could be a very humorous debate.

Windows 8 Service Pack 1 released

Windows 8 Service Pack 1 released

I read a lot about the upcoming Windows 8, release.  Most of what I’ve read was not positive. The metro (or whatever they call it now) interface, no basic DVD playback, program and driver incompatibility, the UEFI mandate…

As the rollout date nears, most of what I hear is that Win 8 is simply not ready.  Microsoft’s latest announcement seems to prove that.  Officially it is not a Service Pack, but instead labeled “General Availability Cumulative Update”.  As the name implies it contains updates that were made before the OS’s General Availability date.

Microsoft is trying to put a positive spin on it, saying they are getting updates to the end user faster than ever before.  I see it as not being ready for market in the first place.

On their webpage, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2756872 they give the PROs and Cons.  The Con sounds like a regression to the days of Win 95
Known issues
The following known issues may occur after you apply this update:
When you turn a Windows feature on or off, the computer may require a restart. For example, this action may be necessary when you turn Remote Access on or off.

I foresee Win 8 to be another embarrassment for Microsoft on the same level as Win ME.  Thanks anyhow, I’ll stick to Linux and Win 7 for now.

Linux VNC installation tutorial

Linux VNC installation tutorial

Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a great way to assist others when they need help with their computers.  I dual boot Win7 and Linux, for a long time I’ve had TightVNC installed on the Windows side of my PCs, but had never set up the server/client on the Linux side.

Followed the instructions on this page and it worked flawlessly on LMDE with XFCE.  I chose ssvnc viewer, as it supports SSH tunneling.

For testing I accessed my Linux box through a Win7 machine, that I was accessing from my Linux box.

Debate Prediction

Debate Prediction

I predict that tonight’s #presidentialdebate will further strengthen my opinion that neither of the major party’s delegates are suitable to run this country effectively.

A troubling state of our union.  I do not wish to “throw away my vote” (again) on a 3rd party candidate that has no chance of winning. At the same time I cannot with a good conscience cast a vote for the best of two evils.
